Why Biotech and Entrepreneurship?

Every morning before elementary school, Brett would wake up early to watch The Jeff Corwin Experience while chomping on cereal for breakfast. Then, in class he would sit atop desks and watch Bill Nye the Science Guy teach about marine mammals and momentum! This is why it was such a sentimental and surreal experience when he was fortunate enough to attend lectures given by Jeff Corwin and Bill Nye! Seeing two of his childhood heroes made Brett reflect back on the last 15 years and just how much these icons of science and wildlife conservation shaped his present-day path. They instilled in him an early love of biology that, as he grew older, transitioned into a complete fascination with biotechnology and how it can offer the brightest future for humanity. Now, Brett's goal is to work for and eventually develop a novel company in the niche where biotech meets business because he wants to be a part of creating this healthier, bio-based future to benefit humans and the environment.

This is most important to him because he sees the potential for aiding victims of debilitating diseases through personalized genetic therapies, ceasing the suffering of animals for industry with synthetically-cultivated tissue, and outcompeting the environmentally-destructive ingredient harvesting trade with microbial production. He deeply desires to make a difference in these areas during his lifetime, and he knows it is possible via driving biotechnology through business.

Through his undergraduate studies in biochemistry, molecular biology, and entrepreneurship, Brett has cultivated an entrepreneurial mindset targeting innovation where biology, business, and technology intersect. You can see some examples of these bio-based endeavors in the 'Projects' section, or you can click here

In addition to these entrepreneurial endeavors though, Brett has some interesting personal aspects to help provide more insight into his make-up below:

Dual US / Swiss Citizen

In addition to being a US citizen, Brett is very proud of his Swiss heritage known for innovation, environmental stewardship, and biotech leadership. And because of his Swiss citizenship, Brett has EU work privileges and can easily travel / work abroad in Europe.

Musician

Having begun playing saxophone in the fourth grade, Brett has now been playing for over a decade! In high school, he attended two semesters at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey to learn jazz from professional musicians in the NYC / NJ areas. Aside from going to school six days a week during this time, he was also involved in the Sparta High School jazz band and won best soloist at a northern New Jersey jazz competition.

In addition to saxophone, Brett has taught himself ukulele over the past several years and always enjoys learning new songs.

Resident Assistant

Brett served for two years as a freshman Resident Assistant (RA) in Penn State's Pinchot Hall. He truly enjoyed the position as he was afforded the opportunity to have meaningful influences on young adults as they transitioned to independence. To help his freshman resident phase into university life, he acted as a leader, a role model, and a resource, both academically and personally, by helping them to overcome curriculum challenges, homesickness, and providing mental health reassurance. They often came to Brett for advice, and he always tried to go above and beyond to help them. Sometimes, this meant giving them his 'Happy Light' for the day when they were feeling down, or other times it entailed having meaningful conversations about life in a segment that his female residents comically dubbed ‘Boy Talk with Brett’. Brett's commitment to helping others displayed itself in his lasting relationships, as many of his prior residents still came to visit him the next year.

Pescatarian / Vegetarian / Lover of Animals

Brett is a pescatarian / vegetarian and a huge animal lover (that is his rescue dog, Kiele, on the left). Animals really motivate him to pursue biotech because society is on the cusp of saving billions of animals’ lives annually due to implementing synthetic, lab-grown cells instead of traditionally-harvested meat! Brett also sees the potential of utilizing biotech methods to help improve the lives of street animals and control invasive species to protect natural habitats.
